Seems like any decent coach would pursue winning *through* player development, so the two goals are organically related. You learn to develop your skills in order to play better, in order to win more.

Either one pursued without the other becomes arbitrary and meaningless.

Meistergoat, your position and mine aren't inconsistent. I think younger children should be involved more in developmental activities, but once they start keeping score, winning/losing is the essence of that game and development logically takes a bad seat . . . within the confines of THAT game. That's one big reason I think younger leagues should emphasize practice more and competition less. The competition shouldn't be the most important thing, but once the season is dominated with games (matches, meets, etc.), winning and losing is the thing that dominates. Within the game, the child can also develop . . . but that's an accidental benefit of the competition, it's not the essence of the competition. The essence of practice, on the other hand, is development, which is why youth sports should emphasize it.

My post, incidentally, was geared at the high school level. Anything below high school, and the emphasis should be on development (I think, but I'm not an expert on such matters).

I will reason, until blue in the face, that most youth sports..especially in community leagues where teams are arbitrarily created from among friends and schoolmates...are about player development to move youngsters closer and closer to their potential. One day, when they earn the right to don the varsity colors of their school through competitive tryouts, then winning is the goal.

Excellent! Thank you for these thoughts. I was thinking that if we don't treat sports as "winning is everything" then the analogy of running a race used by St. Paul does not make any sense. In other words, if we don't get it right on the lower plains then it will not help us understand and get it right concerning the "highest things". Thanks again for these thoughts.
