I’d even include local publications. Given budget and staffing cuts, local reporters have their work cut out for them. In my experience, as a public servant, newspapers almost never have the space to accurately explain how or why decisions were made, or the spirit in which decisions were made. That’s not a criticism, it’s just a fact.

Remember, newspapers and broadcast media, in general, are businesses themselves. They do not exist to serve the public; they exist to make profits for their owners.

On the Iraq War thing, according to the books I’ve read Saddam was intentionally misleading Iran on his WMD program. He perhaps somewhat rationally believed Iran was a bigger threat than the U.S. and simply did not believe the U.S. was seriously going to come after him, especially given the way we pulled away from Baghdad the first time around. He believed the U.S. was a paper tiger, and I suppose dictators are always going to be isolated to the point of not correctly assessing other countries’ intentions.
