An Online Annoyance
Does anybody enjoy the online news videos? You know what I'm referring to: You're surfing the Internet, you see a link to an interesting story, you click on it, and (instead of a printed news story) a video screen comes up. I almost always kill the screen and move on. I've asked over a half-dozen friends, and they all told me they hate the videos, too.
So why are they being used so extensively? I gotta assume they're more expensive to produce than simple news stories. My guess is, they generate better ad revenue than a printed news story, but that kinda begs the question: Why do they generate better ad revenue than a printed news story, if the average viewer declines to watch it? Is Madison Avenue still struggling with these issues, and those stupid short videos are just part of the growing pains?
That's my guess.

Yeah, I don’t like the videos either, and never watch them. Not sure about ad revenue – my guess is that the site designers (or their management) think the videos are cool and attractive. You’d be surprised how much web content is driven by the unsubstantiated opinions of management and design teams, at least in my experience.
