The Daily Eudemon
"The only end of writing is to enable the readers better to enjoy life."
Samuel Johnson, The Idler, 4/5/1760

The Weekend Eudemon

Finally, an evening a drinking.

I’m taking some days off work, so I busted my back for the past four days, trying to get my desk cleared. It worked. I came into the office Friday morning, went to Mass, knocked out a few small projects, took a leisurely lunch, went to the party store to stock up on beer and wine for the coming week, knocked out a few tiny projects, then went to the drinking club at 3:00 a.m. p.m. (I went early, but not before noon).

I’d been meaning to hit the drinking club on a summer afternoon for quite awhile. Its deck overlooks a lake, and I’d been wanting to enjoy the sunny view while drinking from a tall pilsner. Yesterday, it finally happened. None of my friends were out there, so I exchanged pleasantries with the bartender, then wandered out. And sat. And drank. And watched boats. And thought, “Life isn’t so bad after all” and “I probably have at least forty more years to enjoy such moments.”

Unfortunately, such thoughts are often followed with mental disruptions, like “I probably have cancer,” but I was able to banish them this time. I think the key to such moments is the existentialist approach: just enjoy. Don’t look at the enjoyment, just look. Just enjoy.

I should probably explain what I mean by that, but it would take awhile. I wrote an essay years ago (”Zen Child”) that was never published that explains in detail what I mean. I went ahead and posted it as a “Random Essay.” Its lengthy and has shortcomings, but I’ve found its concepts helpful. Click here, if you want to read it.

Well, I gotta run. I hope the Eudemon finds you in good spirits as the sun enjoys its glorious reign.

"The Daily Eudemon is the sort of thing that Chesterton or Mencken would be doing, if they were alive today. It's what, in saner times, was called journalism. In the writing and in the reading, it's exactly the sort of leisure we should want at the basis of culture."
Mike Aquilina, Author of The Fathers of the Church and TV Talk Show Host.

"Literate Catholicism-urbane, witty, engaged-is alive and well! If you can read, you should be reading The Daily Eudemon!" David Scott, author of A Revolution of Love: The Meaning of Mother Teresa

"If you like your blogs pithy, nimble, pointed, high-spirited, and waggish, then bookmmark Eric Scheske's The Daily Eudemon. Ooops! You want prolixity, density, meandering, dull, and sober? Then run (do not walk!) to the blogs of the major news outlets. They have just what you want. Honestly they do." John Peterson, Editor, G.K. Chesterton: Collected Works, Volumes 12 and 13.

"Eric Scheske's web site is full of information and insight.  Always worth a read."  James V. Schall, Author of Another Sort of Learning.

"Eric Scheske has one of the few indispensable sites in an overcrowded blogosphere." Thomas E. Woods, Jr., Ph.D., New York Times Bestselling Author and Author of How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization.
