The Hangover

Well, a fine mess we’ve gotten ourselves into. The only good news: The Democrats won’t get 60 seats in the Senate. But they still have a shot at 59. With even 56, they’ll have enough Republicans cave in to break filibusters. So what will they do?

1. Freedom of Choice Act. I give it an “8″ (scale of 1-10 of likelihood, 10 being a sure thing).
2. Civil Rights for Homosexuals in the Work Place: 9
3. Federal act to impose gay marriage: 4
4. Increase spending: 6.5 (I think maybe even the far left understands red ink)
5. Unionize workforces, large and small: 9.8
6. Impose “hidden taxes,” all sorts of initiatives that will put costs on businesses that aren’t direct taxes or don’t cost the federal government money: 9.9.
7. Open the country up to terrorism by pulling back Bush’s offensive without increasing our border defenses: 9
8. Fairness doctrine: 7
9. Pro-choice Supreme Court Justices: 9.99999
10. Nationalized health care or a version that starts us down that road: 9
11. Tax hikes on those that make over $250,000: 9
12. Tax hikes on the middle class: 7 (remember this one; he promised he wouldn’t and he knew all along the government was awash in red ink; if he says later, “I didn’t know how bad things were,” he’s simply lying).
13. Tax breaks for the middle class: 3
14. Increase the price of food by subsidizing ethanol even more: 8
15. Relax obscenity laws: 9.

Well, it’ll be an interesting four years, even if scary ones.

By the way, yesterday I made a reference to gay marriage. In light of the close vote in California, I went back and looked at Obama’s “record” on the issue. I knew he said he opposed it, but I wasn’t sure if that was simply more of the same “rush to the center” rhetoric (like his promise of tax cuts for the middle class). It appears he might be sincere on the issue, so I recant/modify my reference yesterday. Then again, a federal gay marriage act might be just the bone he needs to throw the far left if he realizes that he can’t do all the spending he’s promised.

   I just told my wife this morning that within two years we’ll hear, “we had no idea it was this bad” as an excuse for why a socialist agenda isn’t working. The excuse works for raising taxes on the middle class too.
